Nursery Team: Frequently Asked Questions

The Nursery Team program is where ECAD’s youngest Service Dogs in Training get their start. By opening your home to a puppy, you’ll help them master basic skills, develop confidence, and experience the world in a safe, loving environment—laying the foundation for their future as a life-changing partner.

How long will the puppy stay with me as a Nursery Team volunteer?

Puppies enter your home at around 10 weeks old and stay for approximately 6 to 7 months, with the possibility of extending the stay if needed.

What responsibilities do Nursery Team members have?

You'll teach the pup foundational skills like basic commands (sit, come, down, stay), household manners, and expose them to new environments to build confidence and social skills.

What does ECAD provide, and what do I need to supply?

ECAD covers all essentials—food, crate, and the puppy. Your part? Provide a safe, loving home, attention, and follow-through on training and care.

Are there any commitments or requirements I should know about?

Yes—prospective volunteers must attend one training class per month, return for vaccination appointments, submit weekly progress reports, ensure the puppy is not left alone for more than 3 hours at a time, and commit to at least 6 months of service (with optional extension).

How do I get started as a Nursery Team volunteer?

Simply complete the brief online application, and a team member will reach out to discuss next steps.
